Music of Northern Spain - Galicia, Asturias, Cataluna, etc.
The music of Northern Spain can be described as Celtic, being
based on the Spanish bagpipe, or "gaita." The legendary guitarist Sabicas played many of these themes on his flamenco
guitar, and Val continues this tradition. Val and his wife Lucia head the group Celt-Iberia, performing the music from the
northern regions of Galicia and Asturias.
Repertoire includes Northern Themes, Cantabrico, Muneira, Alala das Marinas,
Xota da Guia, Variations on a Catalan Theme, Maria Solina, Variaciones on Galician Themes, and others.
Val does not consider himself a classical guitarist, in any
way. However, there are many classical guitar pieces that have become standards, and that he enjoys playing.
Repertoire includes Recuerdos de la Alhambra, and other pieces by Spanish guitar
composer Francisco Tarrega; Asturias (Leyenda) by Isaac Albeniz; Etudes by Classical composer Mauro Giuliani; selected
pieces by Manuel de Falla,
